Rockford entered the Friday contest at 10-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference… and with a recent history of pummeling a hapless Mound-Westonka team… things were looking up. Until… they discovered they actually had to PLAY the game. The other team isn’t going to just lay down for you. MW took it too the Rockets by slowing the pace of the game WAY down, not attacking without thinking and really playing a good “stop the big man” game.
In the end the Whitehawks pulled down the win 57-52.
This game demonstrated again, that if you want to take the big man out of the equation, simply start pushing him around, or swing the ball around until he gets tired of chasing it. MW did both and it reaped great rewards for them.
With that loss, Rockford fell out of the top 25 AA teams in the state to #28 now sandwiched between Minneapolis Edison ahead of them (7-5) and East Grand Forks behind them (13-2). The good news is Brooklyn Center fell this week as well ending up at position #30. More importantly, the Rockets fell to 1-3 in the section. That doesn’t bode well for a first round sub-section game… dead middle of the pack, only advantage is currently it would be a home game. The opponent though would be Brooklyn Center, the team that knocked the Rockets out of their State run last season in the Section Semi-Final game.
If things were to shape up now into playoffs, the matchups in the 5AA section would be:
International School @ North, PACT @ Maranatha, Howard Lake @ Breck, SW Christian @ Litchfield, Watertown @ Holy Family, Blake @ Providence and Brooklyn Center @ Rockford.
That can all change in the remaining 11 games, and Rockford plays to High End teams in Jordan and Sauk Centre before then, along with another round of Dassel-Cokato and Mound-Westonka at AAA, all of which can move them up the standings quickly. Just gotta take care of business and make sure you win the games you SHOULD win and not look past them.
